Positive Thinking - not all the time please.

There are days when I just cannot be bothered with positive thinking.

I get daily emails from various sources, usually in the USA, pounding home the positive message and I look at them with a mixture of delight or sheer disbelief sometimes.

As a hypnotherapist with many years experience I do feel we need to take a more human approach to therapy, positive thinking, success coaching etc etc.

For a start if we were to look more closely at the lives of many of the big names in this broad field we would probably be very disappointed . Anthony Storr's book about gurus and their ilk was called " Feet of Clay " and it is a most apposite title.

How many scandals have evangelists and faith healers been involved in ? They are a bit like our politicians and the expenses racket - they don't live up to expectations.

And these pundits of positive thinking all seem to keep saying the same things over and over and it's easy to wonder if the message just isn't getting through or maybe is not true in the first place.

Of course positive thought is helpful, healing and inspiring. But don't let it become the be all and end all of your life. And don't believe anything I say either, test it , try it and discover your truths and realities. That's what Buddha insisted and it's pretty good advice for any seekers on this path to personal change.

Now if anyone is looking for a brilliant book about the alternative to positive thinkers then " Smile or Die " by Barbara Ehrenreich is the one to read. She has suffered cancer and investigated the horrors of low wages and poverty in America, she knows real life and expresses her thoughts vividly. She is no Pollyanna for sure.

I still believe in what I do and I know the Law of Attraction works. Today I feel the need to sit back from hype and spend time reflecting about what works and what's baloney.
