Yesterday I had a conversation with a graphic designer and we were talking about what people might find hypnotic.
We talked about colours, textures, sounds ,shapes and smells - any of which can fascinate people and absorb their attention. When you get a combination of these it can lead to a deep, meditative, trance-like state.
If you have ever been captivated by a landscape or felt awestruck by a starlit sky, or been mesmerised by music or the fragrance of incense then you will know what we were discussing.
So the state of hypnosis is perhaps not so strange and unfamiliar after all. One of the main barriers to people trying hypnotherapy is a misperception of what hypnosis is like. It is not being brainwashed nor is it like a drug-induced reverie.
It is a natural state of mind in which we become more open and receptive to suggestions, ideas and images - for our wellbeing.
